Importance Of Splash Guards on Cars

Splash guards are commonly known as mud guards in Nigeria, though it has other names like mud flaps and splash aprons depending on the region where you live. These are protective accessories attached behind tyres to prevent rocks, water and mud from being projected upward onto the car while driving. During this rainy season it’s more important than ever to have these accessories attached to your car. We are going to be looking at the uses of splash guards and it’s importance on your car.


Splash guards have four main purposes which are:

  • It protects car paint from being chipped by flying debris while driving.
  • It prevents dirt and other grime from getting into vulnerable parts of your car.
  • It protects pedestrians from been hit by projected debris when driving on streets.
  • It keeps cars cleaner, requiring less frequent washing.

Vehicles with large tyres and deep treads such as SUV tyres are more prone to spraying debris.  Trucks and SUVs are the biggest segments for guards, although they are becoming increasingly common on cars these days.


There are various ways to classify types of splash guards. Below are the most helpful hints:

  • By fitting: There are universal fits or customized fits depending on your type of var or choice.
  • By attachment: There are splash guards that requires drilling into the vehicle’s body to attach and the ones that don’t need drilling.
  • By material: There are rubber, plastic, carbon fiber and metal splash guards.
  • By shape: There are flat and molded splash guards.

Depending on your choice of splash guards, ultimately your safety and the safety of pedestrians on the road is the main focus when driving in this rainy season.
