6 Vehicle Warning Smells Your Nose Can Recognize

Have you ever been driving and suddenly you start to smell a weird odour coming from your car? This are mostly warning signs that something is wrong. To differentiate the types of smells, I have put together 6 odour types you should look out for to identify what is potentially wrong with your car.

1.) Burnt Rubber

The smell could mean slipping drive belts or misplaced loose hoses that might be rubbing against rotating accessory drive pulleys. In case you want to inspect this when you pop open your hood, do not reach in if the engine is hot.

2.) Hot Oil

The smell of hot oil could mean that oil is leaking onto the exhaust system. To verify, look for oil on the pavement where the car is parked or look for smoke coming from the engine area. Turn off the engine before checking for a leak.

3.) Gasoline

This smell is likely the sign of fuel leakage, possibly a fuel injector line or a leaking fuel tank. Please note that a possible smell of fuel is a fire hazard, so immediate attention should be given.

4.) Syrup

The sweet smell of syrup could be a sign that the car is leaking engine coolant from a component related to the car’s cooling system. Do not open the radiator cap when it’s hot.

5.) Burning Carpet

The smell could be a sign of brake trouble. Have your brakes checked right away especially if this smell is happening during normal driving conditions. Brake trouble is a serious safety hazard and must be attended to immediately.

6.) Rotten Eggs

This smell could mean the catalytic converter is not converting hydrogen sulfide in the exhaust to sulfur dioxide properly. A poor running engine can cause the catalytic converter to be overloaded and fail due to melt down.

With these few tips it could help you to attend to your car immediately before it causes further damages. Please drop your comments if you have something to share with everyone.
