Earlier this week the Lagos state Governor banned the operation of the Vehicle Inspection Officers popularly known as VIO from Lagos roads. This has lead to a lot of mixed feelings of joy and disappointment.
According to Sahara Reporters, the reason for the ban is to ease off traffic congestion on the roads caused by the VIO and to introduce technology to assist in their work. As good as employing new technology to track and monitor vehicle registration and MOT certifications maybe, the question we must still answer is, Are we ready for such technology?
There are lots of failures in the social system in Nigeria, corruption still the number one factor. In many countries of the world, technology has long been implemented in tracking vehicle registrations and MOT certifications. But in Nigeria, sustainability is always an inevitable challenge.
A lot of great projects have been initiated in the country only to crumble after a little while. Government officials neglect these projects under improper supervision, lack of regular upgrading and training and furthermore embezzlement of allocated maintenance funds.
If Technology must be employed to track vehicle registration it will be of immense benefit but it must be done properly and proper supervision and monitoring of the system must be applied for it to be a success
